Libraries and Universities

This page lists some universities and major Italian and international libraries that possess documentary material on insurance and related subjects, such as economics, law, statistics and actuarial mathematics.

Assicurazioni Generali - Group's Libraries

Established in Trieste soon after the Compagnia was set up, the Central Library has 30,000 publications on insurance, law, economics, actuarial mathematics and statistics, published between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries; the Biblioteca A. Donati, created in Rome with the establishment of the INA, has 32,000 publications and 250 journal titles.

British Library

The British Library is one of the world's major centres of knowledge. It has a holdings of more than 150 million works and its online catalogue allows searches on more than 10 million of them.

Kress Library of Business and Economics

The Kress Collection of Business and Economics at Harvard University is one of the world's leading collections of rare books on history and economic policy from the 15th to the 20th century.

Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca

It possesses a collection of more than 70,000 volumes, 1763 periodicals, 346 microfilmed works and 345 CD-ROMs relating to the subjects of the eight faculties, in particular economics, statistical sciences and law.

Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library

The Davis Library is located in New York, in the School of Risk Management at St. John's University, and includes the world's largest collection of risk and insurance-related literature, policies, and documents useful for the study of risk management, insurance and actuarial sciences.

Bibliothèque Nationale de France

Opened to the public in 1692, it now has over 14 million books and printed publications and 350,000 collections of periodicals. Its Collective Catalogue provides access to almost all of its holdings.

Library of Congress

The oldest cultural institution in the USA and the richest library in the world with over 120 million works including more than 18 million books, 54 million manuscripts and 12 million photographs. Fifty per cent of the holdings are in English, the rest are divided among 400 different languages.

Università commmerciale L. Bocconi

It was founded in 1902 as the first university in Italy to offer a degree course in Economics. Today it is a scientific and cultural reference point in the economic, managerial, quantitative and legal sciences.

Leuven Unversity

Consisting of no less than 24 libraries and information centres, it has collections of printed and manuscript texts and an important archive. Of particular note are publications on law, technology, mathematics, economics, ethics and insurance.

Goldsmiths' Library of Economic Literature

This is the University of London Library's largest and best-known collection. It contains a range of works of particular importance to economic and social history: over 66,000 books, pamphlets, periodicals and manuscripts from the 15th to the 20th century.

Università degli Studi di Milano

The library catalogue contains over one million bibliographic records of ancient and modern books, periodicals and audiovisuals. The Library of the Institute for the History of Medieval and Modern Law holds over 40,000 volumes and 200 periodicals.

London School of Economics & Political Science Library 

Founded in 1896, it now contains around 4 million works from all over the world in all major European languages, including over 3,500 volumes on insurance. Every day it is visited by an average of 4,500 people.

Università degli Studi di Torino

It has a University Library System, established in 2002 to coordinate faculty and departmental libraries. It groups 8 areas and 4 subject areas (scientific, legal-economic, humanities and biomedical)
